If you read this blog, there’s a good chance I don’t have to tell you what a travesty it is that Lady Gaga holds reign as the “avant-garde” pop music queen when women like Karin Dreijer Andersson (one part The Knife and full part Fever Ray) largely go unnoticed on the American charts. To quote Rufus Wainwright on the state of the mainstream pop world (originally speaking of Beyonce), “All of [these] songs are formulaic and produced in a way that’s utterly mesmerising in the basest way. There’s no enlightenment.. it’s more of a scientific experiment than an artistic experience.” Andersson is the complete opposite–over the past ten years she has created a unique sound and personal image that are both disturbing and darkly beautiful. Somehow, that translates incredibly well into the dance music realm as well. Take a break from riding that disco stick (who knows where it’s been) and check out Sweden’s answer to our little fame monster.
