Tomorrow night production powerhouse duo Designer Drugs headline the inaugural 18+ dance party Delorean Nites at Lincoln Hall alongside residents Midnight Conspiracy, et al, and we couldn’t be more pumped. New Yorkers and iheartcomix labelmates Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson sure are mysterious as hell, though, and beyond their gritty, hard-pounding electro tracks.. I couldn’t find out much about them. But whatever, all we need to know is that these guys fucking rock. Find out for yourself!

Combining the riotous energy of Members Only AV’s underground parties with the polished production work of La Dolce Vita, co-conspirators Mikul Wing, Louis Kha, and Graham Cody have finally released their first remix as Midnight Conspiracy. Blending the clean, pure synths of italo and grimy bass of heavy electro, they’ve created a banging version of Chromeo’s “Night by Night” which climbed all the way to the #2 spot on Hype Machine. Not exactly a bad debut. The song is just a small sample of what Chicago already knew–Midnight Conspiracy can rock the fuck out of any dance floor.

The release is also featured on the group’s latest mixtape. Titled Delorean Nites, it is a preview of what you can expect from their new monthly residency at Lincoln Hall, kicking off this Saturday February 6th with Designer Drugs. You can also catch them every Thursday at the city’s premier indie-electro dance party Disappear Here. With official remixes of Esser, Hey Champ, Cool Kids, and MSTRKRFT soon to follow, a song to be featured on Crystal Castles’ upcoming remix album and clubs booked around the country, Midnight Conspiracy aren’t going to remain a Chicago secret for much longer.

West London dubstep producers Kidnappa and DRT are a double threat in more ways than one: not only do they collaborate on the explosive work of 16 Bit, but they have managed to capture the two sides of dubstep that often butt heads. On remixes like Joanna Newsom’s “Shallow” (peep my best of dubstep in 2009 post for a listen) and their recent single “Skyline,” they stick to the more mellow side of the genre while still incorporating the deep bass that dubheads crave. Yet they’re also responsible for some of the heaviest drops around–remixing Israeli grime master Borgore’s playful “Foes” and producing original filthy tracks like “Swine Flu” and the Texas massacre weapon-sampling “Chainsaw Calligraphy”.

The bipolar method seems to be working out well for them, as they’re wrapping up a U.S. tour in a couple weeks and moving on to Australia, New Zealand, and multiple stops in Europe. Even corporations are taking notice–check out their song “Jump” featured in a new Nike ad.

Hopefully all you 21+ Chicagoans got to see Smart Bar turned into 16 Bit’s playground this past Thursday. If not, get yourself a fat pair of subs, 16 Bit vinyls and make your own “Funhouse” out of it.

If you weren’t aware…

We’ve danced into a new generation which means you have to ask yourself: what genre is going to take over? Could it still be electo, or disco, dubstep–perhaps some sort of sub-genre? Many are looking towards disco to take the crown at least just for this year. It seems to me that the populous is opening up to more ideas of what dance music can be.

Boulder, CO based group Savoy have steadily been destroying dancefloors and clubs, carrying the electro torch over the past year. The young trio seem to take heavy influence from scene staples Daft Punk, MSTRKRFT, Beetroots, etc and then toss in their own take on the styles that these heavyweights have fashioned before them. A powerful culmination of hard electro combined with touches of techno and house themes can be heard throughout their well thought-out productions. Rather than just drop the typical single, Savoy have already squeezed out several remixes, an EP and most recently a 12 song full-length album entitled Automatic, all currently available for FREE on their homepage. Get hip to these boys quick if you’re looking for some fresh bangers. You can peep Savoy in concert (complete with live drums) on February 26th at The Kinetic Playground. Fire.
